It wasn't until later supplements came out that the OTU started to form. The original game made no mention of the Imperium anywhere at all. Mgt2e is more biased toward the OTU by default.CT character creation is more straightforward and quicker - but lacks the 'background events' and color of the newer game. You can think of it like an "OSR" game in this respect. I've known many people who could never get their head around that. Instead, they're an edge for things you're especially good at. The thing to remember is that skills in CT do not define what you can or cannot do or attempt to do. CT does not have a 'skill' system per se, but a 'throw' system (often involving throwing a characteristic value). The expectation of the older games - and Marc Miller still will say this today - is that they expected the rules to provide a framework for the imagination and the players (including the gm) would work out the rest. CT will require more 'rulings' from the GM, which can mean more work.Given this here are a few random thoughts comparing the two: I play both, though like you I tend to gravitate more toward rules lite and so tend to favor CT, but I do like Mongoose Traveller quite a lot. I've read some praises for MgT2 High Guard. Does it do anything amazing with the extra pages?īy themselves, which one does ship rules and ship combat better? MgT2 Starter Set has twice the page count as CT Books 1-3. Is CT Books 1-3 the concise rules that I hope for? Is it a "complete" game? Classic Traveller seems to fit the bill with a smaller page count. Since I am someone who has already bought way too many RPG books, I am looking for something easier to read through. So far, I have narrowed down to the Classic Traveller 3-books bundle:Īnd Mongoose 2nd ed Traveller Starter Set: I did some Googling, and most people seem to say that Classic and the new Mongoose stuff are the best. Thus, I am looking to get one of the books myself and have a look at the rules. I was a player in a (Classic) Traveller one-shot, and I like how lightweight the system felt. /r/boardgames - Boardgames that isn't TTRPGs.Hide "Table Troubles-threads Related Subreddits
